| Elegance and complexity, exclusive and strong personality; very limited production.
The Doix estate vineyards are situated at a height of 350/500 meters above sea level on hillsides of pronounced slopes, with the characteristic slate soil called "licorella". The grapes come from vines between 80 and 105 years old, with a small but exceptional average production of 400 gram per vine.
2009 was a year of extremes. When Autumn approached, the temperatures moderated with some rain that allowed a very good maturation with harvest in October.
Temperature-controlled fermentation with a total maceration period of about 4/5 weeks what allowed a progressive and excellent extraction. The ageing was of 16 months in new French oak.
95-98 points, Robert Parker's Wine Advocate #194: "The 2009 DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles, tasted from a barrel sample, is a glass-coating opaque purple color with an already complex bouquet of exotic spices, mineral, lavender, incense, and assorted black and blue fruits. Layered, dense, and concentrated, this powerful effort manages to remain remarkably fresh and elegant. It should easily see its 20th birthday and a few more. The Bodega graciously presented several older vintages, all but the 1999 having been previously rated by Robert Parker or myself... Mas Doix’s flagship cuvee is named DOIX Costers Vinyes Velles with an annual production of only 4- 7,000 bottles. It is typically a blend of old-vine Garnacha and Carinena (80-108 years of age) with the proportions varying slightly from year to year. The wine is aged in 100% new French oak for 14-18 months.Drink: 2011 - 2029." (Jay Miller, May-2011)
