Wines from Veneto & Surrounding Areas

by Heidi Chan

Italian language school in Hong Kong Dante Alighieri Society yesterday ran a closed wine tasting with the Santa Margherita Wine Group where wines under the Santa Margherita brand and the Torresella and Kettmeir labels were introduced to the fellow students and their invited guests.

The small group was led by an Italian sommelier through a tasting of five wines, three sparklings from Veneto (Valdobbiadene, Prosecco and Spumante Rosato) and two wines from Alto-Adige (Pinot Grigio and Pinot Nero aka Pinot Noir grown at the high-altitiude vineyards)

Veneto might be the most heard of wine region in North Eastern Italy, but it is not the only part of the wine story attached to it. Due to the long history under influence from the neighbouring countries Austria and Slovenia, the little known appellations Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia are known for their exotic wine styles. So next time you pick a wine, consider trying these undiscovered Italian wines with distinctive narratives and flavours, usually offered at a rather reasonable price.
